The first transplant of human organs was performed in Can Misses hospital last week. The donor of the organs had been pronounced brain dead, but her other vital organs were kept functioning with the aid of special medical equipment.
A team from the hospital, supervised by experts from Barcelona removed the donor's kidneys in a 12-hour procedure, and these have now been transplanted into two lucky recipients who had been waiting for such an opportunity.
It is the intention of the hospital to perform two such operations every year if possible, even though really, with a 100, 000 population, the island needs to have four. Nevertheless this is a great advancement for health care on what is in truth a very small island.
