Review: The Face @ Privilege

Privilege showmanship interwoven with Japanese artistry and deep beats.

The Face of Ibiza combines the raunchy showmanship of Privilege dancing stalwarts with the oriental artistry of Tokyo club brand AgeHa and the smooth tech house beats that characterize this season of Ibiza.

Although the night started a little slowly, the party spirit quickly accelerated as the beats and entertainment upped-the-anti. Privilege’s moving models of perfection were clad in black leather, spikes and the Face’s trademark Micky-Mouse-gone-bad headdresses, some protecting their modesty with a steadily decreasing blanket of balloons, others revealing themselves cheekily with staccato flashes of fire. Entertaining, as always, however the night became particularly interesting with the arrival of the AgeHa performers on stage, who played booming drums and traditional Japanese guitar and flute over a dancing beat provided by the AgeHa DJs. The live component took me by complete surprise and was a real treat of the night. Nothing builds suspense like the beat of a great panda-sized drum.

Other creative AgeHa touches included the delightful dancing girls in kimonos and the visuals provided on the Imax-sized video screen at the back end of Privilege; cleverly designed moving versions of famous Japanese artworks, for example the iconic Great Wave print, by Hokusai. Disconcertingly, decorations at Privilege tonight included a dildo impaled upon a pole attached to a motionless bicycle. It was still motionless when I left, thank goodness...

This is a creative night with fun music and some performance surprises that you really need to see for yourself. The AgeHa and Face of Ibiza collaboration is around until September 20th – get involved and release the oriental in you... to booming tech-house, of course.
