SPTL131: Grayson Shipley

Chunky garage music from the island favourite.

The Mix

Talk us through the track selection of the mix.

"It's simple, chunky garage music with big swinging drums and hefty melodies. At times I like to return to my roots with the early nineties sound of Nervous, High Bias and Strictly Rhythm, Cajual and Relief. After a year of working on very detailed music its refreshing to have direct but effective records with only three or four things happening at once rather than fifty."

Where and how was the mix recorded?

"Dancing round the living room, looking out towards Formentera with a bottle of red wine to hand."

Where did your musical inspiration come from?

"This is a sound that I've always loved. Early garage was one of my formative influences, so it's brilliant to have a new wave of tracks as the sounds grows in popularity again. Its rough and ready, great to mix, and if you don't hammer the tempo it's a really sexy hypnotic style of DJing."

You're a well known man about the island of Ibiza, what is it you love about the place?

"Everything. Sun, beaches, beautiful countryside, so much music and all your friends in a tidy little island sized package. Why would anyone live anywhere else?"

The Plug

What is keeping you busy at the moment?

"Sasha's Access Virus TI Polar."

You've been working with Sasha recently on his involver 3 album, right? How did that go?

"Basically a year, spent in top notch studios with super talented people exploring how to make the best possible record with only that goal in mind, so it has been a gift and a pleasure. I'm still in shock about being asked and hopefully I rose to the challenge of engineering Sasha's intensely detailed music and melodies in a fashion that does them justice. When Sasha's Hot Chip 'Flutes' remix got to Beatport number one in in the summer it was great to see left field electronic music like that making such big waves and hopefully the rest of the album pulls of that trick of being interesting whilst still having impact."

You have a weekend off. What do you do? Where do you go?

"Right now, with the storms railing and the skies drab & grey anywhere warm, but I would be keen to get straight back to Ibiza."

What plans are in place for the coming year?

"Production, product, production. As i'm starting to write again I'm realising how much a year of working on such a big project has changed me, so i'm curious to see what the end results will be."
