Review: Ibiza Calling at Space, 18th June

There's certainly no time for sleeping at Space's mid-week siesta, Ibiza is Calling.

Like any sensible Spaniard, Space can see the benefit of a siesta. But whilst a siesta would usually see one shut up shop and hit the hay, this is an Ibiza super club we're talking about, so mid week sees the club giant take a breather by simply welcoming a more intimate crowd through its doors, and for Wednesdays they're there for Ibiza Calling.

Walking into the Terrace, I can see that this is one party that continues to embrace the good old rave scene. With the room blacked out, lights darting and flashing across the room in time to the fast, energetic beats of big electro and dubstep tracks. Space's very own Ramon Castells was in charge of the decks in the Sunset Terrace, which served as the perfect place to take a break from the pounding beats, a chance to catch up with friends or take advantage of the pizzeria, a feature every club should really invest in (carb-loading to the sounds of great DJs... what's not to love?).

Dance music's answer to the Vontrapps, Shermanology, were in full swing when I arrived. The musical trio made up of sister, brother and cousin can do it all, sing, spin and MC. With a crowd pleaser of a set, they played back to back club classics, with vocalist Dorothy showing everyone the meaning of powerhouse. The high energy feel was intensified with rows of smoke cannons pumping along in time with the bass. There was a change in pace mid way through when the trio slowed things down for a paired down version of Swedish House Mafia's In My Mind, a version I'd certainly hear again and again.

It may be a smaller crowd than Space's usual army, but everyone here certainly puts their all in, faces full of excitement and dedication. There's no room here for the usual non-committal wandering between rooms, trying to find a slightly different sound. Everyone here knows what they like, knows where to come, and here they are. This enthusiasm was clear during Yellow Claw's set with the trio putting the crowd through their paces, who in turn were obediently bouncing up and down, waving their arms left and right, all in time to Lil' Jon's club staple Turn Down For What.

Galeb brought the night to a fitting end, with Justice Vs Simian's We Are Your Friends, a track which certainly sums Ibiza Calling up well. A rave of a party with like-minded people and a friendly atmosphere, this is one night I'll definitely be calling back into.
