Things to do this month in Ibiza - January 2016

Our choice picks for the month

The celebrations of the end of last year may have died down but the air is unusually warm and it's just the ideal time to get out and do things. There's a mix of relaxing and fun January things to do here. Have fun!

Funfair in Ibiza Town

If you thought the spirit of Christmas was truly over, well a brightly glowing ember in the shape of this little funfair in Can Misses, Ibiza Town will prove otherwise. A great day for small kids and big ones, there's a ferris wheel, a witches coven and bags more attractions this year. Each year it grows in size. There's bingo and a raffle for adults, with very Spanish prizes, such as a brace of hams! It's open early evening from 6pm onwards and there are food stalls too, so get some hot warming churros and wander round.

High flying adored

The sight of sky in Ibiza filled with kites is something that would fill the senses with all the joys of childhood yet set on this beautiful island. The 23rd edition of the Posa en Estel al Cel takes place on 31 January in San Antonio at Ses Variades (next to the Sunset Strip), There's also a free exhibition from 21-29 January, called Kites of the World in the Centro de información Joven in the Espai Jove building on Calle Ramon y Cajal. In the big tent on Paseo de ses Fonts from 25-26 January there's a kite making workshop which everyone can join in on, so, you can take your own handiwork and fly it proud.

Symphonic sounds

A soothing symphony could be just what you need to calm those post-seasonal blues and get you through your detox if you're on one. The Banda Sinfónica Ciutat d'Eivissa (Symphony Band of Ibiza) this year celebrates the 25th anniversary of its own formation at the Can Ventosa Cultural Centre in Ibiza Town on 23 January at 7pm. The band is a mix of around 70-80 students, musicians and residents on the island of Ibiza and offers 15 concerts a year, including the New Year's Concert and the Easter Concert. Tickets can be obtained directly from Can Ventosa on Calle Ignasi Wallis.

A night at the flicks

If you Anglophones really can't bear to miss a newly released film whilst you're away, then head on over to Cine Regio in San Antonio this Friday at 7pm when the new Tarantino movie, The Hateful Eight is being shown. This cinema shows many films in their original language with Spanish subtitles and has recent successes with showings of recent films like Star Wars and Spectre, the new Bond epic. Other reasons to go: it's a nice night out before hitting a restaurant and you can improve your Spanish reading the subtitle translations. It's on Calle Barcelona towards the back of town, so park up and walk. Also, check out its Facebook page for new releases.

San Antonio festival

This is certainly San An's month with all its various January events around its Patron Saint's day this Sunday 17 January. San Antonio is actually the most celebrated Saint in the Balearics, which should surprise few of us. Activities will be taking place in the church square, Paseo de ses Fonts and Paseo de la Mar. There's a procession, traditional folk dancing and a blessing of the animals, and it's not for making them taste divine. This is also the island's oldest known folk festival – so immerse yourself in an event that celebrates an original spirit of Ibiza.
