Ibiza Carnival 2006

It's the time of year when Ibiza releases itself from winter's lukewarm grip

It's the time of year when Ibiza releases itself from winter's lukewarm grip and greets the spring with an almighty party.

As usual, the fiesta to celebrate Carnival, Carnaval, Mardi Gras or Pancake Tuesday, call it what you like, lasts a whole week here.

With excuses to don fancy dress as whatever you like nearly every day there's also lots of opportunities for eating, drinking and jigging about to live music. Here's the full programme of events:-

Thursday 23 February, Reina Sofia Park, 19.00. Spanish Omelette Party, featuring a giant tortilla, dancing to the Orchestra Tanit, and prizes for the best fancy dress.

Friday 24 February, Boulevard Abel Matutes, 16.00. Kids' fancy dress competition plus magicians, games, dancing and Disney.

Friday 24 February, Vara de Rey, 19.00. Pensioners' fancy dress competition plus dancing to the Orchestra Havana.

Saturday 25 February, Vara de Rey, 21.00. Special concert of comedy and songs in the traditional Carnival style of Cádiz featuring La Agrupación de la Peña Los Majaras.

Sunday 26 February, Ibiza Town, 11.30. The big parade known as La Rua which winds its way all round Ibiza town with floats, bands, music, a giant paella and everyone in fancy dress. This year's theme is Venice!

Tuesday 28 February, Vara de Rey, 16.30. Massive kids' party with entertainment from Paco Atrium.

Wednesday 1 March, Figueretes beach, 18.30. Traditional sardine barbecue and live music.

Doesn't it sound great?
